History of the Club

SCHC past and present

The club was formed in 1983 by 6 people whose common interest was building and flying radio controlled model helicopters.
It was apparent that there were a lot of people in the area with an interest in model helicopters so the decision to form the club was taken with a view to combining knowledge and experience, and to help each other reach higher standards.
The technology involved in the early models made them both expensive and difficult to fly, some were not equipped with Gyro’s whilst those that were used mechanical spinning gyroscopes.  Advances in electronics and manufacturing have helped bring down costs whilst hugely improving performance leading to a hobby that anyone can enjoy.

The club originally flew at Baiter Park in Poole then moved on to Hamworthy and later Lychett Maltravers until an issue with noise forced another move to take place.
We currently have the benefit of flying from two sites on an alternate month basis.  These are located at Broom Hill, Ferndown, North East of Poole and Morden to the West. At both sites there is a choice of fields with good aspects and plenty of room for up to 5 pilots to fly at any one time. This arrangement gives our members a change of venue and scenery.

The club now has a very wide selection of members machines from the smallest of electric models through 2 stroke and 4 stroke to the large gas turbine machines providing the awesome sights, smells and sounds of jet aviation. All types of helicopter are flown at our fields, 3D flybar and flybarless, scale of all sizes and even an autonomous UAV drone.
There is a wide spectrum of skill levels at the club, both those starting to master the hover and those flying impressive 3D so there is no shortage of help and advice for those that want it.

Please feel free to come along and visit us if you are interested, you may want to just watch the flying or bring your machine along and fly from our fields.
We are pleased to be able to offer a 3 month initial membership for those who are unsure about committing to the full year, with the ability to extend to the full twelve months membership at any time.
Your membership can include public liability insurance with the BMFA provided by us or, if you are already insured, your membership fee will be reduced accordingly.
Our membership and insurance normally runs from January to December and current fees can be seen on the left of this page.
